I do have to agree with this post. There are so many classes that college students are required to take that are completely pointless. I know for myself, personally, I felt that almost every class I've had to take in college is utterly pointless. Philosophy? Sociology? Linguistics? While they may be interesting classes that I do learn information in, I often find myself wondering why I'm paying at least $1000 dollars to take a sixteen-week course that contained information I could've taught myself in a week.

Money is the root of all evil. It certainly is a spirit breaker when you realize that you are arms length away from greatness, but you'll never get there. That's just part of life and hopefully all of us won't encounter terrible circumstances like that student did. I hope that she gets to follow her dreams and succeed in school despite the man's attempt to keep her down.

I wonder if they are refering to students being unable to write for tests. That definitely has a different form than creative writing. But, I agree with you that creative writing still has a form. Creative writing does have a form that doesn't always lend itself to informative writing, so I think that we need to make sure that students can write in many forms on many topics.

I believe that linking creative writing to essay writing can be useful. Like you stated there is still structure in a creative writing piece. If a student is struggling with formal writing using creative writing to help the transition may help the student. Many students are afraid of essay's because structure is taught so rigidly that they feel they lose their voice in the writing. If a student can write well in a creative form it's only a matter of helping adapt the student into a more formal setting for essay writing. Writing is writing and the more a person can write, the more comfortable they will feel in their writing.

What a tough topic. I never thought about the problem of assimilating former military combatants into a college atmosphere, but I can suppose that the transition might not be easy. I had brothers who served in world war II and went on to college. They didn't seem to have a problem, but that war was different than any one that has been since then. It was patriotic to the height because we were the good guys. Since Vietnam, which was what was going on with my college friends, the reconnect to America was very difficult. It was almost what the aftermath of the civil war must have been like for all Americans. America was so divided. Some young people were burning flags, others were escaping to Canada, and then the boys that were fighting were coming home maimed if not in body bags. There was resentment, and a complete lack of meaning in the war. Today, AMerica is hated by so many people that the psyches of our soldiers can be affected. I think it's a great idea to give extra respect in the form of educational help to them.

Good points, Emily. It would mean more to a person to know that they got into their school of choice on their own merit versus paying someone $40K to get them past admissions. The other part that is most unbelivable is that people actually are willing to fork over $40K just to get their kid into an Ivy League school. Even if I was loaded I think I'd balk at paying that sum. What happens if my kid doesn't get accepted to Harvard? Do I get my $40K back?

I agree that her service charge does not include those students less fortunate. I also think this would have been great if she would have done something like this for inner city students, for maybe less money or allow contributers to sponser a child. This would truly make a difference for the community, students and the university. The students chosen either way would have to study hard and do the things necessary to keep their grades up. You are also right, I do not think that she is holding their hand I think she is giving out the answers to what the school is requestering. What a shame and short live gratitude.

With the changing times in this country with various economic crisis, the issue of homelessness is of great importance. There are indeed many families that have lost thier homes and have no help to go too. School is indeed a place that a child can be safe and help forget the pain from thier homelife for about 8 hours. Us people have to be compassionate to those around us that may not dress or have the material things we have because they are trying to make ends meat. Maybe we need to step out of the box and put ourselves in thier shoes and realize of how important school is for others than it is for some.

Now every one knows that she deserves that pay! Look at all the great things that have happened so far under her administration. Seriously, how can we teach our students responsibility, ethics, and being unselfish with this type of model to follow? It says alot about the DPS mentality. I agree with a pay raise if it is based on performance. Don't we have to go back to school and get Master degrees, CEU's , and additional endorsements to get higher on the pay scale? This is a joke and with this type of crap DPS will forever be a laughing stock in the public education community.

Wow, Emily! This is really deep! I agree with your points about the cost and the expectations of every student being Harvard material. This is a farce and she should not be allowed to charge this amount. This is a slap in the face to people really trying to help kids (in an affordable manner). This type of thing is one of the problems with education in America. I'm glad you posted this article. Buyer beware!
